What is Gyjeb Ransomware

Gyjeb is a ransomware virus that runs data encryption to extort money from victims. It looks very similar to Keq4p Ransomware, which means they are likely to come from the same malware family. Just like Keq4p, Gyjeb Ransomware assigns a random string of senseless symbols along with its own .gyjeb extension. To illustrate, a file like 1.pdf will change its look to something like 1.pdf.wKkIx8yQ03RCwLLXT41R9CxyHdGsu_T02yFnRHcpcLj_xxr1h8pEl480.gyjeb and reset its original icon. After all files end up edited this way, the virus creates a text note called nTLA_HOW_TO_DECRYPT.txt which entails decryption instructions. You can familiarize yourself with this note in the screenshot below.

nTLA_HOW_TO_DECRYPT.txt

Your network has been breached and all data were encrypted.
Personal data, financial reports and important documents are ready to disclose.
To decrypt all the data and to prevent exfiltrated files to be disclosed at
hxxp://hiveleakdbtnp76ulyhi52eag6c6tyc3xw7ez7iqy6wc34gd2nekazyd.onion/
you will need to purchase our decryption software.

Follow the guidelines below to avoid losing your data:
- Do not modify, rename or delete *.key.gyjeb files. Your data will be
undecryptable.
- Do not modify or rename encrypted files. You will lose them.
- Do not report to the Police, FBI, etc. They don't care about your business.
They simply won't allow you to pay. As a result you will lose everything.
- Do not hire a recovery company. They can't decrypt without the key.
They also don't care about your business. They believe that they are
good negotiators, but it is not. They usually fail. So speak for yourself.
- Do not reject to purchase. Exfiltrated files will be publicly disclosed.

Developers say you have been attacked and now see your data locked from any access. In order to return it and make sure no data leaks will occur, victims are obliged to purchase unique decryption software held only by cybercriminals. You should contact them by logging into the attached .onion link in Tor browser. After this, cybercriminals will supposedly give you another set of instructions to complete the payment and acquire the decryption tool. The price for decryption is not disclosed until you establish contact with cybercriminals. Note that the price of decryption is often set high (from hundreds to thousands of dollars), which makes such a purchase unaffordable for most of the victims. This is why such ransomware tries to target business owners that can sacrifice their money for important data. Despite this, trusting any ransomware developers in terms of the payment is always a risk. They can fool you and do not send any decryption tools even after receiving your money. At this point, no third-party decryptors alas know how to approach data blocked by Gyjeb Ransomware. This is because ransomware uses strong cryptographic algorithms which are hard to decipher without damage. Therefore, the best solution to recover your data is backup copies. You can use them from external devices after deleting the virus. In case no such option is present, you can refer to decryptors and recovery tools by trusted third-party vendors, but this is less likely to help. Third-party tools can damage your files and make them permanently undecryptable. If you are still willing to try them, make sure to use only trusted and effective decryption tools. You can find a couple of them in our guide below. Before running performing any recovery methods, make sure to delete Gyjeb Ransomware from your system as well. Instructions on complete removal can also be found below.

How Gyjeb Ransomware infected your computer

Malicious spam letters, trojans, backdoors, keyloggers, unreliable downloads of pirated or cracked software from unofficial and file-hosting websites like Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (Torrent clients, Gnutella, eMule, etc.), fake updates, vulnerable RDP configuration, and more are all distribution channels abused by malware proliferators.

The one to point out in detail is e-mail spam. Fraudulent figures run forged campaigns that spread a number of identical letters from ostensibly legitimate companies (FedEx, DHL, etc.). This trick helps stimulate users to open the received letters. In case such letters are actually malicious, potential victims will spot either some attached files or links leading to download pages. Many virus developers use popular file formats like .DOCX, .PDF, .EXE, .RAR, .ZIP, or .JS to bundle executable scripts meant to initiate the installation of malware. Accessing these files means malicious software will penetrate your system immediately denying all protection protocols set up by default Windows Defender. The penetration can be averted, but only if you have special anti-malware software with live protection installed. You can find more information about such and other protectionary tools in our tutorial below. This way, you will be able to protect yourself against various threats like Gyjeb Ransomware that dwell around the web in the future.

As an additional way to save your files, we recommend online backup. Local storage, such as hard drives, SSDs, flash drives, or remote network storage can be instantly infected by the virus once plugged in or connected to. Gyjeb Ransomware uses some techniques to exploit this. One of the best services and programs for easy automatic online backup is iDrive. It has the most profitable terms and a simple interface. You can read more about iDrive cloud backup and storage here.

3. Do not open spam e-mails and protect your mailbox
