What is Lisp Ransomware

Emsisoft has managed to create its decoder for some versions and variants of STOP Ransomware, when the encryption tool uses an offline key for encryption. Tool is called STOP Djvu Decryptor and can be downloaded below.

Lisp Ransomware (a.k.a. STOP Ransomware or Djvu Ransomware) is extremely dangerous virus that encrypts files using AES-256 encryption algorithm and adds .lisp extensions to affected files. The infection mostly involves important and valuable files, like photos, documents, databases, e-mails, videos etc. Lisp Ransomware does not touch system files to allow Windows operate, so users will be able to pay the ransom. If the malware server is unavailable (computer is not connected to the Internet, remote hackers’s server does not work), then the encryption tool uses the key and identifier that is hard-coded in it and performs offline encryption. In this case, it will be possible to decrypt the files without paying the ransom. Lisp Ransomware creates _readme.txt file, that contains ransom message and contact details, on the desktop and in the folders with encrypted files. Developers can be contacted via e-mail: helpmanager@mail.ch and restoremanager@airmail.cc. Here is the text from the file:

Files encrypted by some versions of Lisp Ransomware can be decrypted with help of STOP Djvu Decryptor. Specialists of Dr.Web lab were able to decrypt files, encrypted with some versions of Lisp Ransomware in private mode. However, Dr.Web has not yet released any public decoder. Before starting file decryption, you need to stop the malicious process and remove Lisp Ransomware. To prevent ransomware infections use following apps: Emsisoft Anti-Malware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. In this article, we describe how to remove Lisp Ransomware and decrypt .lisp files in Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7.

How Lisp Ransomware infected your PC

Virus modifies “hosts” file to block Windows updates, downloading antivirus programs, and visiting sites related to security news or offering security solutions. Lisp Ransomware comes along with AZORult trojan, which was initially created to steal logins and passwords. The process of infection also looks like installing Windows updates, the malware shows a fake window, that mimics the update process.

fake windows update from Lisp Ransomware

It uses rdpclip.exe to replace a legal Windows file and to launch an attack on a computer network. After encrypting the files, the encrypter is deleted using the delself.bat command file. Lisp Ransomware virus is propagated via spam attack with malicious e-mail attachments and using manual PC hacking. Can be distributed by hacking through an unprotected RDP configuration, fraudulent downloads, exploits, web injections, fake updates, repackaged, and infected installers. Virus assigns a certain ID with the victims, which is used to name those files and supposedly to send decryption key. Great tools to protect against Lisp Ransomware are: Emsisoft Anti-Malware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
