What is Pwpdvl Ransomware

Pwpdvl is a ransomware virus designed to extort money from victims by running encryption of data. In other words, people affected by this malware will no longer be able to access and view their files. When Pwpdvl enciphers potentially important files, it also assigns the victim’s ID, along with the .pwpdvl extension at the end. For instance, a file like 1.pdf will alter to something like 1.pdf.[ID-9ECFA84E].pwpdvl and rest its original icon. To make victims pay money for the recovery, the file encryptor creates a ransom text note (RESTORE_FILES_INFO.txt), which contains decryption instructions.

It is demanded of victims to contact the swindlers (via Bitmessage or qTOX) and pay for decryption in Monero (XMR) cryptocurrency. Before sending the payment, cybercriminals also offer to test free decryption – victims can send 2 encrypted files (non-important and 1MB max) and get it unlocked for free. This is a kind of guarantee that extortionists offer to prove their decryption abilities and give extra confidence for paying the ransom. Though, please note that trusting cybercriminals is always a risk. Some users get fooled and do not receive the promised decryption tools/keys regardless of meeting the demands. Despite this, it is unfortunately only ransomware developers who hold the necessary decryption keys for safely restoring access to data. Independent decryption using third-party tools or Windows shadow copies can be possible but in very rare cases when ransomware contains flaws or did not manage to encrypt the data as intended. At the time of writing this article, no third-party tools are known to be capable of cracking the ciphers generated by Pwpdvl Ransomware. The only feasible ways to recover your data are either by meeting the demands of cyber-crooks or by recovering data from existing backup copies. Backups are copies of data stored on external devices such as USB drives, external hard drives, or SSDs.

Using backups copies is always safer. As was mentioned earlier, collaboration with cybercriminals equals risk and does not fully guarantee the receipt of promised keys/tools. Please note that decryption/recovery tools featured in our guide are generic and do not guarantee successful decryption for blocked files – due to the above-mentioned. Furthermore, using third-party tools can damage the configuration of files and make them permanently corrupted. You can consider using the tools as a last resort option if no other recovery alternatives are available to you. Will recovery be attempted without the help of threat actors, it is essential to delete the ransomware virus from your system so that it does not impact other files or spread to neighboring systems within the same network. Even if you choose to collaborate with them to decrypt files, it is still pertinent to make sure the ransomware is removed from the system as well. Use our guide to remove the Pwpdvl encryptor and protect your system against such threats in the future.

How Pwpdvl Ransomware infected your computer

A large number of channels aid cyber intruders in spreading malware to unprotected systems – among such are phishing e-mail letters, unprotected RDP configuration, infected software installers (pirated or cracked), exploit kits, trojans, fake updates/license cracking tools, unreliable ads, backdoors, keyloggers, and other dubious channels. Such channels often make inexperienced/naive users download and open some malicious file or link. For instance, there are malicious e-mails that disguise harmful attachments as legitimate and genuine files, such as .DOCX, .XLSX, .PDF, .EXE, .ZIP, .RAR, or .JS. By camouflaging themselves under trustworthy organizations (e.g., delivery companies, tax authorities, banks, and so forth), they mimic legitimacy and increase the likelihood of fooling inexperienced victims.

It is advised to stay away from interacting with shady download resources, torrent-sharing websites, dubious ads, potentially malicious attachments/links, and other types of content that raise a sense of suspicion or doubt. Make sure to download software only from official, trusted, and non-pirated resources as sometimes cybercriminals bundle malware into repacked installers of cracked and pirated software. Due to large demand, many crooks capitalize on users who seek to bypass paid software.
