What is Recov Ransomware

Recov is a new ransomware variant of the VoidCrypt family. After infiltrating a system, it runs data encryption (to prevent victims from accessing files) and tells victims to pay for a kit of decryption software + RSA key for unlocking the files. Instructions on how to do it are presented inside the Dectryption-guide.txt ransom note. One more thing that this ransomware does is assigning visual changes to encrypted files – a string of characters consisting of the victim’s ID, cybercriminals’ e-mail address, and the .Recov extension will be added to filenames. For instance, a file originally named 1.pdf will be changed to 1.pdf.[MJ-TN2069418375](Recoverifiles@gmail.com).Recov or similarly.

Cybercriminals demand that victims establish contact with them via e-mail (Recoverifiles@gmail.com or Recoverifiles@protonmail.com in case of no answer). While it isn’t made clear what extortionists need, it is likely that they will require their victims to pay a certain fee for a decryption tool and RSA key that are available only to the developers. In addition, victims are also guided to send 1 test file along with a key file located in the C:/ProgramData directory (for example, RSAKEY-SE-24r6t523 or RSAKEY.KEY). Lastly, cyber crooks give warnings against trying to modify, change, or decrypt-recover blocked files in any way that excludes the participation of the attackers. The explanation for that lies in the risks of dealing permanent corruption to files, which will make them no longer decryptable.

Unfortunately, it is necessary to admit that cybercriminals are usually the only figures able to recover the data without risks of damage or loss. Thus, if you do not have an available backup copy of encrypted files that can be retrieved from some external storage, paying the crooks might be the only way out of this situation. You can also give a try to third-party decryption/recovery tools in our guide, however, they deliver successful decryption only in rare cases when ransomware has some vulnerabilities that could help bypass its ciphers. For now, no successful independent decryption cases (that do not involve the attackers) have been reported in relation to .recov files. You should also bear in mind that using third-party may indeed lead to damage to files. Thus, it is always a good idea to make a copy of encrypted data before trying to unlock it with the help of third-party tools. Whether you choose to recover the files yourself or by paying the ransom, it is important to first make sure the ransomware is no longer running its malicious activity within your system. Otherwise, it may encrypt more files upon their copying or successful decryption. To delete it fully and without traces, we encourage you to use our full-fledged guide with removal instructions below.

How Recov Ransomware infected your computer

Oftentimes, users infect themselves after executing a malicious file on their system. Such a file could be delivered through phishing e-mail messages, disguised cracked/pirated software, fake updates/license cracking tools, malicious ads, and other channels. In rarer cases, users can be infected due to poor protection of the network, vulnerabilities in QNAP/NAS storage, unprotected RDP configuration, etc. Never visit unverified pages and never download or open content that seems suspicious. For example, many get tricked into downloading and executing malicious files that are attached to phishing e-mail letters. By camouflaging such letters under legitimate companies or entities (e.g., banks, tax authorities, police, delivery firms, etc.), cybercriminals manage to deceive inexperienced and naive users into opening malicious attachments. Once done, users will more likely be infected with malware. Thus, always think twice before opening shady content that you received from an unfamiliar and unreasonable source. In addition, you should also rely on downloading software only from official and authentic pages. Avoid downloading programs from third-party pages that host copies of legitimate software. As an additional way to save your files, we recommend online backup. Local storage, such as hard drives, SSDs, flash drives, or remote network storage can be instantly infected by the virus once plugged in or connected to. Recov Ransomware uses some techniques to exploit this. One of the best services and programs for easy automatic online backup is iDrive. It has the most profitable terms and a simple interface. You can read more about iDrive cloud backup and storage here.

3. Do not open spam e-mails and protect your mailbox
