What is STOP Ransomware

Beginning from September 2019, STOPDecrypter is not able to decrypt files affected by STOP Ransomware. The malefactors modified the virus code, which makes the method, that files were decrypted previously, impossible. The only sure way to restore access to your data is to restore the previous copy of the file from backup.

STOP Ransomware (DJVU Ransomware) is extremely harmful and one of the most active encryption viruses. More than half of ransomware submissions to ID-Ransomware (ransomware identification service) are made by victims of STOP Ransomware. Although it has been in circulation for a couple of years, the number of infections caused by the STOP Ransomware continues to increase. It may be somewhat ironic, but most of the victims (at the moment) are users of pirated software. The version of the virus, that is under consideration today, adds .nesa, .boot, .domn or .karl extensions to files. The malicious program also creates a text file (called _readme.txt) in each infected folder, which explains to the user that his computer is infected and he will not be able to access his data until he pays a ransom of $980. If the user pays within 72 hours after infection, the ransom is reduced to 490 US dollars. The example of this ransom note is presented below.

Tampering with encrypted files can cause permanent damage, and the chances of guessing the correct decryption key are virtually zero. Alternatively, of course, you can pay the ransom. But keep in mind that you are dealing with criminals who can still increase the size of the ransom. Or just steal your money without giving you the decryption key. Besides, funding the hackers is encouraging them to create new versions and variations of the virus. There is a tool called STOPDecrypter, that was able to retrieve the key for older versions of STOP Ransomware. However, currently, it is unable to decrypt .nesa, .boot, .domn or .karl files. There is a possibility, that STOPDecrypter will be updated and we provide download links and instructions on how to use the tool below. There are standard Windows system functions, such as restore points, the shadow copies, previous versions of files, can be useful, although, malicious algorithms often prevent such opportunities. Stellar Data Recovery Professional is one of the best file-recovery tools and, if used properly, may recover copies and duplicates of encrypted files, that were removed prior to infection. In the article below we provide essential steps to remove STOP Ransomware and recover .nesa, .boot, .domn or .karl files.

  1. Download STOP Ransomware Removal Tool

How STOP Ransomware infected your PC

Virus modifies “hosts” file to block Windows updates, downloading antivirus programs, and visiting sites related to security news or offering security solutions. STOP Ransomware comes along with AZORult trojan, that was initially created to steal logins and passwords. The process of infection also looks like installing Windows updates, the malware shows a fake window, that mimics update process.

fake windows update from STOP Ransomware

It uses rdpclip.exe to replace a legal Windows file and to launch an attack on a computer network. After encrypting the files, the encrypter is deleted using the delself.bat command file. STOP Ransomware virus is propagated via spam attack with malicious e-mail attachments and using manual PC hacking. Can be distributed by hacking through an unprotected RDP configuration, fraudulent downloads, exploits, web injections, fake updates, repackaged and infected installers. Virus assigns certain ID with the victims, that is used to name those files and supposedly to send decryption key. Great tools to protect against STOP Ransomware are: Emsisoft Anti-Malware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
