What is GoTiS Ransomware

GoTiS Ransomware is a malicious program that is part of the Xorist Ransomware family. It was discovered during a routine investigation of new submissions to the VirusTotal website. This malware encrypts data on the infected system and demands a ransom for its decryption. GoTiS ransomware appends the .GoTiS extension to the filenames of the encrypted files. After the encryption process is completed, GoTiS creates identical ransom notes on the desktop wallpaper, in a pop-up window, and a text file named HOW TO DECRYPT FILES.txt. The ransom note informs the victim that their files have been encrypted and that the decryption key and software will cost 0.04 BTC (Bitcoin cryptocurrency), which is approximately 1400 USD. The specific encryption algorithm used by GoTiS ransomware is not yet known. However, ransomware typically uses either symmetric or asymmetric encryption algorithms.

Unfortunately, decrypting files encrypted by GoTiS ransomware without the decryption key is rarely possible. The only solution to recover the files is from a backup, if one was made prior and is stored elsewhere. It’s recommended to keep backups in multiple separate locations to ensure data safety. In the event of a ransomware infection, it’s crucial to isolate the infected device as soon as possible to prevent the ransomware from spreading throughout the entire local network. It’s also recommended to use a reputable anti-virus to perform regular system scans and to remove detected threats. While paying the ransom might seem like the only option to recover the encrypted files, it’s generally advised against, as it does not guarantee the recovery of the files and it encourages the attackers to continue their malicious activities.

How GoTiS Ransomware infects computers

Ransomware like GoTiS can infect computers through various methods. The most common infection methods include social engineering (phishing), malvertising, fileless attacks, remote desk protocol, drive-by downloads, pirated software, network propagation, malware obfuscation, and ransomware-as-a-service. Phishing emails using social engineering are a common method, where attackers spoof emails and trick users into clicking a link in a fake email. Malvertising and exploit kits can also be used together to propagate ransomware. If users click on a malicious advertisement, they are redirected to the exploit kit’s landing page, which scans the machine for vulnerabilities that the attacker can then exploit.
