What is Rs-jon Ransomware

Rs-jon is a ransomware infection that encrypts system-stored data and demands victims to pay 50$ for its decryption. While restricting access to files, it assigns the .rsjon extension. For instance, a file previously named 1.pdf will change to 1.pdf.rsjon and reset its original icon. Following successful file encryption, the virus changes desktop wallpapers and instructs victims to follow instructions inside of the READ_ME_PLZ.txt note.

The ransom note represents a short message saying victims should transfer 50$ (in Bitcoin or Kebab cryptocurrency) and notify cybercriminals about the payment via their e-mail address – darkjon@protonmail.com. After this, victims will supposedly get the necessary tools for running the decryption of their data. If you decide to pay the ransom to swindlers, please note that there is always a risk of getting scammed by them. Unfortunately, decrypting data without the help of cybercriminals is rarely possible. Users can only recover the files using backup copies from external storage (like a USB-flash drive or hard drive) or decrypt them via free third-party tools if such are available. For now, there is no known software that could unlock access to .rsjon files. This may change in the future if private keys stored by cybercriminals will become leaked or publicized eventually. You can give a try to some reputable instruments we gathered in our guide, however, we cannot guarantee they will be able to help. Prior to trying any recovery method that excludes the participation of cybercriminals, it is important to delete the ransomware virus from your computer so that it does not continue its malicious activity. Follow our instructions to do it and apply additional measures to protect yourself against such threats in the future.

How Rs-jon Ransomware infected your computer

Ransomware infections are typically spread via channels like trojans, deceptive third-party downloads, fake software updates/installers, backdoors, keyloggers, botnets, system exploits, and e-mail spam letters. Cybercriminals target inexperienced and try to bait into executing (opening) malicious attachments or links that can be included within e-mail spam letters. Alternatively, malware developers can deploy malicious advertising campaigns to fool users into downloading some software that contains a virus inside. Cybercriminals cover their letters under the names of legitimate companies or entities (e.g., delivery companies, tax authorities, banks, and so forth). For instance, it can be a fake message encouraging users to open a file with tax information. Unfortunately, doing so can expose you to facing an imminent ransomware infection. Files with .DOCX, .XLSX, .PDF, .EXE, .ZIP, .RAR, .JS, and other extensions are often the ones cybercriminals abuse to deliver various infections. While such formats have nothing to do with malware on the initial basis, cybercriminals have learned how to configure them for executing the installation of malicious infections. Therefore, you should beware of opening them. In addition, it is also worth-avoiding downloads of software on unofficial or dubious pages. Read our guide below to learn about security tips that will protect you from such threats in the future.
