What is Sheeva Ransomware

Sheeva is a recently-discovered ransomware infection that targets Windows systems to encrypt potentially important data and demand payment from victims for its decryption. While executing the virus sample on our machine, Sheeva encrypted mostly business-related files which involved accounting, finance, and database information. It also renamed each file according to this pattern id[victim’s_ID].[Sheeva@onionmail.org].[original_filename].sheeva. For instance, a file named 1.xlsx was renamed to id[xmrJ9Lve].[Sheeva@onionmail.org].1.xlsx.sheeva and dropped its original icon as well. After this, the ransomware infection created a text file named sheeva.txt to feature decryption instructions.

/**IMPORTANT***/

Cybercriminals say that victims will have to pay some amount of money (unspecified) in Bitcoins to retrieve unique decryption tools. For this, users are instructed to contact swindlers using either Sheeva@onionmail.org or Sheeva@cyberfear.com e-mail addresses and also include their personally-generated ID. It is also allowed to send two files (under 5 MB) and get them decrypted for free. Many cybercriminals use this trick to show their decryption abilities and also motivate victims into further collaboration with them. Since Sheeva Ransomware targets business-related data, it is reasonable to assume that its scope narrows down to corporate rather than home users. This means the further announced price for decryption may be quite high and shy many victims away from decryption. Unfortunately, unless there are serious bugs and underdevelopment inside a ransomware virus, manual decryption without the help of extortionists is almost impossible. The best way to recover your files is via backup copies. If you have such available somewhere on other devices, you can easily use them to restore the files. As a desperate alternative, you can give a try to using third-party tools in our guide below, but we are unable to guarantee that they will actually help. In general, ransomware infections are very devastating and able to bring a ton of damage to businesses or regular users. Swindlers behind the Sheeva virus also threaten to leak the encrypted data to third-party resources should victims opt-out of collaboration with them. This is another big risk a company may face when dealing with ransomware. If you still decide to not pay the ransom and choose your own way of file recovery, it is important to delete the virus first. Otherwise, it may continue its malicious activity and even spread onto other PCs operating within the same network. Read our guide below to retrieve the necessary instructions.

How Sheeva Ransomware infected your computer

The vast majority of infections (also ransomware) reach successful distribution through phishing-type channels. A virus may be disguised as some legitimate-looking file (e.g., Word, Excel, PDF, EXE, JavaScript, RAR, ZIP, etc.) in e-mail spam letters. These letters often present information explaining the “importance” of opening such files (or links) under the name of popular companies. Many cybercriminals use the templates of DHL, FedEx, Banks, Tax Authorities, and other popular organizations to make users believe such messages are true in what they say. Unfortunately, following requests of such spam messages will most likely lead to malware getting installed on your system. This is why it is important to avoid such e-mail letters and double-check information if it coincides that you were already a customer of some company before. It is also worth mentioning that many infections may target users via fake software installers or updates, malicious cracking tools, system vulnerabilities, backdoors, keyloggers, and other types of suspicious channels as well. To be more protected against such threats in the future, we recommend you read our guide below to learn more practical tips on this topic.
