What is DVN Ransomware

DVN is a ransomware infection that runs strong encryption to hostage potentially important files until a ransom is paid. In addition to encryption, the virus also assigns the .devinn extension to highlight the blocked data; changes the desktop wallpapers; and create the unlock_here.txt text note with recovery instructions. Here is what the ransom note says:

unlock_here.txt

All of your files have been encrypted
Your computer was infected with a ransomware virus. Your files have been encrypted and you won't
be able to decrypt them without our help. What can I do to get my files back? You can buy our special
decryption software, this software will allow you to recover all of your data and remove the
ransomware from your computer. The price for the software is $200. Payment can be made in Bitcoin only.
Payment informationAmount: 0.0077 BTC

Cybercriminals say they will provide the necessary decryption software only if victims pay 0.0077 BTC (around $200). It is stated the payment can be done only in Bitcoin and to the attached crypto address. Unlike many other ransomware infections, developers behind DVN Ransomware do not include any means of communication with them (e.g., e-mail, various messengers, etc.). Thus, it is very unclear how victims will communicate with the attackers in order to receive the promised decryption tool after making the payment. Paying the ransom is highly not recommended since there is a risk of not getting anything in return. Unfortunately, we have to note that cybercriminals are usually the only figures actually capable of fully decrypting access to data.

Manual recovery independent of swindlers is usually only possible if you have an available backup copy of files, which can be used to replace the encrypted files. Otherwise, if you still need to recover some files, you can also give a try to third-party decryption/recovery tools that are disguised in our guide below. Though, please note that there is a low chance that they will be able to help. In addition, using third-party software that is unable to decipher strong data can damage the files and make them permanently broken. Thus, it is always a good idea to make a copy before trying to manually decrypt them. Whether you are going to attempt recovery/decryption of your files or just leave it as it is, either way, it is pertinent to get rid of the ransomware infection so that it does not encrypt other pieces of data. Follow our guide below to do so and explore the aforementioned free recovery/decryption alternatives.

How DVN Ransomware infected your computer

Ransomware can enter a poorly-protected system using a number of channels: phishing e-mail letters, trojans, deceptive third-party downloads, fake software updates/installers, backdoors, keyloggers, botnets, system exploits, and various other vectors as well. As a rule, users infect their computers themselves – due to inexperience and negligence around the web. As a such, many tend to download unverified files/program installers from unofficial and untrustworthy pages. Malware can be disguised as pirated software installers, software cracking tools, freeware, ostensibly legitimate updates, and other content that is often in demand among users. Downloading such software from unofficial vendors always involves a risk of catching some malware. Thus, it is recommended to avoid doing so.

It is also worth noting that many inexperienced users get tricked into downloading malicious attachments in phishing e-mail messages. Such letters can be masked under legitimate entities (e.g., delivery companies, tax authorities, banks, and so forth) and endorse malicious attachments (.DOCX, .XLSX, .PDF, .EXE, .ZIP, .RAR, or .JS extensions). By claiming users should perform some “important or “urgent” action, cybercriminals trick them into downloading and executing malicious attachments, which are most likely to contain a virus. Thus, never trust unreasonable messages that want you to click or download something. Always stay cautious and be wary of such pishing techniques. We also recommend you read our guide below as there is a lot of useful information regarding protection against malware threats.

As an additional way to save your files, we recommend online backup. Local storage, such as hard drives, SSDs, flash drives, or remote network storage can be instantly infected by the virus once plugged in or connected to. DVN Ransomware uses some techniques to exploit this. One of the best services and programs for easy automatic online backup is iDrive. It has the most profitable terms and a simple interface. You can read more about iDrive cloud backup and storage here.

3. Do not open spam e-mails and protect your mailbox
