What is H3r Ransomware

H3r is a ransomware infection designed to render files inaccessible (using encryption) and demand payment for their recovery afterwards. In addition to running secure cryptographic encryption, the virus also modifies affected filenames by appending a new extension that consists of the personal victim’s identifier, cybercriminals’ email address, and .h3r at the very end. For instance, an original file like 1.pdf after encryption will change to something like 1.pdf.id-9ECFA84E.[herozerman@tutanota.com].h3r and become no longer accessible. Following this, the ransomware will display a pop-up window and create the info.txt file, which present decryption guidelines to victims.

Overall, it is said that in order to get the encrypted files unlocked, victims have to contact extortionists via email and pay for decryption in Bitcoins. While the price remains unknown until users write to cybercriminals, it can be anything ranging from two- to even four-digit amounts. Before paying the ransom, threat actors also offer to take advantage of their free decryption service in order to test their data-recovery capabilities. That said, victims can send up to 3 files (less than 3MB total & non-valuable) and get them decrypted for free. Although ransomware attackers are indeed capable of decrypting the blocked data, there is no 100% guarantee that they will fulfill their promises and deliver the necessary decryption software/key after the payment. Thus, it is always better to use your own backups for recovering data, if such are available.

If no such are present, then it is alas only threat actors that are able to return full access to data. Therefore, you should always evaluate the risk and decide whether you actually want to pay the attackers. In rare cases, it may be possible to decrypt access to data using professional third-party tools, however, the success rates are quite low with ransomware that does not have any known vulnerabilities (applies to H3r Ransomware). Moreover, sometimes third-party decryptors can damage the configuration of data and make them permanently corrupted. You can give a try to third-party tools from our guide below as a last resort option, however, it is worth making a copy of encrypted data in order to avoid corruption. Note that before trying to recover your data, be it alone or with the help of cybercriminals, it is crucial to delete the ransomware infection to prevent it from performing its malicious activity again. Use our guide below to do so and explore the aforementioned third-party decryption alternatives.

How H3r Ransomware infected your computer

The way ransomware penetrates systems varies from victim to victim and depends on what distribution channels a user exposes him or herself to. Most common infiltration techniques include phishing e-mail spam letters, trojans, deceptive third-party downloads, fake software updates/installers, backdoors, keyloggers, botnets, system exploits, and others as well. The target of such channels are usually users who are easily tricked into downloading some malicious attachment or link. For instance, many malfactorsdevelopers incorporate ransomware- or trojan-infected files along with e-mail spam letters. Such messages are usually random and tend to mimic legitimate companies/entities (e.g., delivery companies, tax authorities, banks, and so forth). Most often users are asked to open some phishing link or malicious attachment (.DOCX, .XLSX, .PDF, .EXE, .ZIP, .RAR, or .JS extensions) by claiming it is “important” or “urgent”. Once such attachments are opened, it is likely that a pre-loaded infection will be deployed and settle itself on a computer unless some live anti-malware software prevents it from happening.

You should never trust messages/content that seems suspicious. Either ignore or simply delete them completely. Please note that file formats used in malicious letters have nothing to do with malware on an initial basis. Cybercriminals simply learned how to misuse their technical properties in order to inject and install computer/smartphone infections. It is also recommended to avoid downloading software (especially pirated, cracked, etc.) from unofficial and unverified resources. Because there is a plethora of such third-party resources, some of them could easily overlook or even intentionally spread a malicious installer that may contain some malware.
