What is Hakunamatata Ransomware

Hakunamatata Ransomware is new version of NMoreira Ransomware (NMoreira 2.0). Virus encrypts user files with RSA-2048 and AES-256 encryption algorithms and adds .hakunamatata suffix to affected files. After finishing infection process Hakunamatata creates file “Recovers files yako.html” on the desktop. Hackers offer users to contact them using Bitmessage system and pay the ransom. Amount of ransom is currently unknown, but likely it is somewhere between $300 and $1500. Decryption key is generated during encryption, and currently unknown. Therefore, there is no way to decrypt or restore files unless users has backup. It is currently unknown if developers of Hakunamatata Ransomware send decryption key, but according to the research of previous versions – often they ignore ransom payments. So, there is no point to pay malefactors and we recommend to remove Hakunamatata virus and preserve files for possible decryption in future.

How Hakunamatata Ransomware infected your PC

Hakunamatata Ransomware virus developers still use spam e-mails with malicious attachments for distribution. Usually, attachments are DOC or XLS documents. Such documents contain built-in macros, that runs in the background when user opens the document. This macros downloads and runs main executable with random name. Since that moment Hakunamatata starts encryption process. Antivirus may not catch this threat and we recommend you to use HitmanPro with Cryptoguard. This program can detect encryption process and stop it to prevent the loss of your files.
