What is InputActivity

InputActivity is labeled as a potentially unwanted app that often installs on macOS without users’ consent. This piece of software was discovered to display dubious ads (banners, surveys, pop-ups, coupons, etc.) and assign a fake search engine that replaces the default homepage. Such functionalities are often inherent to adware and browser hijackers. The dubious ads displayed by InputActivity can therefore lead to potentially dangerous pages that try to bait users into downloading malicious/unwanted software, display adult content, or make users become victims of scam/phishing techniques. As mentioned, search engines assigned by browser hijackers are considered fake, and this is because they are often unable to generate their own results. Instead, browser hijackers typically use legitimate engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, or others to feature the search results. Another potential threat that may be posed by unwanted software like browser hijackers is data surveillance. Upon installation, the app or extension may modify browser settings in a way to allow the collection of sensitive browsing data, such as IP-addresses, geolocations, history, cookies, and other types of information that cybercriminals might sell to third-parties afterwards. Although InputActivity is not classified as malware, its capabilities are still enough to create privacy/identity threats for users being affected by it. Thus, we strongly advise you remove it using our instructions below.

How InputActivity infected your computer

Users whose systems have been infected by InputActivity reported it happened after they downloaded a fake Adobe Flash Player installer or update. This is a very common technique to promote not only unwanted, but malicious software as well. Users can stumble upon ads or landing pages claiming your system lacks some “important” software, which has to be installed. This way, cybercriminals fool inexperienced users into downloading some unwanted or malicious app that is disguised as something legitimate (Adobe Flash Player, in this case). Apart from this, infiltrations of unwanted programs can also be through third-party software installers. As a rule, it is cracked or pirated program installers that get downloaded from Peer-to-Peer (torrent) pages. Creators of unofficial installers often seek monetary gains by collaborating with other dubious vendors and helping them share their software. Such dubious software may be included inside the installer and presented as an additional offer. However, because many users neglect reading the “Terms & Conditions” and also do not check all settings of the installation (“Custom”, “Advanced”, etc.), they end up infected with unwanted software eventually. Sometimes the installer may offer to choose between “Recommended” or “Manual” types of installations, which could be your case as well. In other cases, it may also be that information about third-party offers is not disclosed at all, meaning it is impossible to prevent its installation.
