What is LanRan Ransomware

LanRan Ransomware is a type of malicious software designed to encrypt files on an infected computer, rendering them inaccessible to the user until a ransom is paid. This ransomware was first discovered in 2017 and has since evolved into various versions. It is part of a broader category of ransomware that targets both individual users and organizations, demanding payment in exchange for the decryption key needed to restore access to the encrypted files. LanRan Ransomware appends specific extensions to the encrypted files, making it easy to identify affected files. For instance, it adds the extension .LanRan2.0.5 to the filenames. This alteration not only signals that the files have been encrypted but also prevents the user from opening them with their usual applications. LanRan Ransomware employs strong encryption algorithms to secure the files it targets. Typically, it uses a combination of AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) for file encryption and RSA (Rivest-Shamir-Adleman) for encrypting the AES key. This dual-layer encryption ensures that decrypting the files without the corresponding decryption key is virtually impossible. Upon completing the encryption process, LanRan Ransomware generates a ransom note to inform the victim of the attack and provide instructions for payment. The ransom note is usually placed in prominent locations such as the desktop or the root directories of affected drives. It may be named something like @___README___@.txt or similar, depending on the variant. The note typically includes instructions on how to pay the ransom, often in Bitcoin, contact information for the attackers, such as an email address (e.g., lanran-decrypter@list.ru) and a warning that attempting to decrypt the files without paying the ransom could result in permanent data loss.

What is encryption?
Encryption is a reversible modification of information for security reasons but providing full access to it for authorized users. To become an authorized user and keep the modification absolutely reversible (in other words to have a possibility to decrypt your files) you should have an individual private key.
But not only it
It is required also to have the special decryption software (in your L_A_N_R_A_N Decryptor software) for safe and complete decryption of all your files and data.

Fortunately, there are decryption tools available for some variants of LanRan Ransomware. For instance, the HT Brute Forcer and HT Decryptor tool can decrypt files encrypted by certain versions of LanRan, as it supports multiple HiddenTear variants, including LanRan. This tool can be used to recover files without paying the ransom, provided the specific variant of LanRan is supported. We provide detailed instructions below.

How LanRan Ransomware infects computers

LanRan Ransomware typically spreads through several common vectors:

Email Attachments: Malicious email attachments, often disguised as legitimate documents, are a primary method of distribution. These attachments may contain macros or scripts that execute the ransomware upon opening.
Malicious Links: Links in phishing emails or on compromised websites can lead to the download and execution of the ransomware.
Exploit Kits: These kits exploit vulnerabilities in outdated software to deliver the ransomware payload.
Peer-to-Peer Networks: Files shared on P2P networks may be infected with the ransomware.

Once executed, LanRan Ransomware begins the encryption process, targeting a wide range of file types and making them inaccessible to the user.

How to decrypt and restore .LanRan2.0.5 files

Use automated decryptors

Download HT Bruteforcer and HT Decryptor

Use the following tools from Michael Gillespie called HT Bruteforcer and HT Decryptor, that can decrypt .LanRan2.0.5 files. Download it here:

Download HT Bruteforcer Download HT Decryptor
  1. Visit the download page for HT Brute Forcer and download the hidden-tear-bruteforcer.zip file.
  2. Extract the contents of the downloaded ZIP file.
  3. Locate and execute the HiddenTear Bruteforcer.exe file.
  4. Click on the Browse Sample button.
  5. Choose an encrypted PNG file from your system. It is recommended to select a smaller file for faster processing.
  6. Click on the Start Bruteforce button to begin the brute-forcing process. This process may take some time depending on the complexity of the encryption.
  7. Once the tool finds the encryption key, it will automatically attempt to decrypt the test file.
  8. Verify if the test file was decrypted correctly. If it was, save the discovered key.
  9. Download the standalone HiddenTear Decryptor tool.
  10. Double-click on the hidden-tear-decrypter.exe file to launch the decryptor.
  11. Enter the decryption key discovered by the brute forcer.
  12. Click on the Decrypt My Files button to start the decryption process.
  13. Once the decryption process is complete, the tool will display a screen indicating the number of files that were successfully decrypted.

There is no purpose to pay the ransom because there is no guarantee you will receive the key, but you will put your bank credentials at risk.

Dr.Web Rescue Pack

Famous antivirus vendor Dr. Web provides free decryption service for the owners of its products: Dr.Web Security Space or Dr.Web Enterprise Security Suite. Other users can ask for help in the decryption of .LanRan2.0.5 files by uploading samples to Dr. Web Ransomware Decryption Service. Analyzing files will be performed free of charge and if files are decryptable, all you need to do is purchase a 2-year license of Dr.Web Security Space worth $120 or less. Otherwise, you don’t have to pay.

If you are infected with LanRan Ransomware and removed from your computer, you can try to decrypt your files. Antivirus vendors and individuals create free decryptors for some crypto-lockers. To attempt to decrypt them manually, you can do the following:
