What is Miia Ransomware
Miia Ransomware is a malicious software that belongs to the Djvu family of ransomware. It is designed to encrypt files on the victim’s computer, rendering them inaccessible and appending the extension .miia to each affected file. For example, a file named document.docx
would be renamed to document.docx.miia
after encryption. The encryption used by Miia Ransomware is highly sophisticated, typically involving AES-256 or RSA-2048 algorithms, making it virtually impossible to decrypt files without the unique decryption key held by the attackers. Once the files are encrypted, the ransomware generates a ransom note, _readme.txt, which is placed in every folder containing encrypted files. This note provides instructions for the victim on how to contact the cybercriminals and pay the ransom, usually demanding payment in Bitcoin.

While it is generally advised against paying the ransom, as it does not guarantee the recovery of files and only funds further criminal activity, there are some tools available that may help. One such tool is the Emsisoft STOP Djvu Decryptor, which can decrypt files encrypted by certain variants of the Djvu family if they were encrypted using an offline key. To use this decryptor, victims need to download the tool from Emsisoft’s official website and follow the instructions to attempt decryption. However, it is important to note that this tool will not work if the files were encrypted using an online key, which is unique to each victim and stored on a remote server controlled by the attackers. In such cases, the only viable solution might be to restore the files from a backup, if available. Always ensure to report the ransomware attack to relevant authorities and maintain regular backups to mitigate the damage from future incidents.
How Miia Ransomware infects computers
Miia Ransomware infects computers through various deceptive methods, primarily exploiting user vulnerabilities. One common vector is phishing emails that contain malicious attachments or links, which, when opened, execute the ransomware payload. Additionally, Miia can infiltrate systems via software cracking tools and installers for pirated software, often disguised as legitimate applications. Downloading files from unreliable sources such as P2P networks, unofficial websites, or third-party downloaders also poses a high risk. The ransomware may also spread through fake software updates or installers, tricking users into believing they are installing legitimate software. Once executed, Miia encrypts files and demands a ransom for their decryption, causing significant data loss and financial damage.

Virus modifies “hosts” file to block Windows updates, downloading antivirus programs, and visiting sites related to security news or offering security solutions. Miia Ransomware comes along with AZORult trojan, which was initially created to steal logins and passwords. The process of infection also looks like installing Windows updates, the malware shows a fake window, that mimics the update process.
It uses rdpclip.exe to replace a legal Windows file and to launch an attack on a computer network. After encrypting the files, the encrypter is deleted using the delself.bat command file. Miia Ransomware virus is propagated via spam attack with malicious e-mail attachments and using manual PC hacking. Can be distributed by hacking through an unprotected RDP configuration, fraudulent downloads, exploits, web injections, fake updates, repackaged, and infected installers. The virus assigns a certain ID to the victims, which is used to name those files and supposedly to send a decryption key. Great tools to protect against Miia Ransomware are: Emsisoft Anti-Malware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

How to protect computer from viruses, like Miia Ransomware, in future
1. Get special anti-ransomware software
Use G-DATA STOP/Djvu vaccine
G DATA has released a vaccine to block STOP/DJVU ransomware from encrypting victims’ files after infection. The vaccine prevents the ransomware from encrypting files anymore, but it does not prevent the infection itself. The vaccine is available on GitHub. Download it below:
Use ZoneAlarm Anti-Ransomware
Famous antivirus brand ZoneAlarm by Check Point released a comprehensive tool, that will help you with active anti-ransomware protection, as an additional shield to your current protection. The tool provides Zero-Day protection against ransomware and allows you to recover files. ZoneAlarm Anti-Ransomware is compatible with all other antiviruses, firewalls, and security software except ZoneAlarm Extreme (already shipped with ZoneAlarm Anti-Ransomware) or Check Point Endpoint products. The killer features of this application are: automatic file recovery, overwrite protection that instantly and automatically recovers any encrypted files, file protection that detects and blocks even unknown encryptors.
2. Back up your files
As an additional way to save your files, we recommend online backup. Local storage, such as hard drives, SSDs, flash drives, or remote network storage can be instantly infected by the virus once plugged in or connected to. Miia Ransomware uses some techniques to exploit this. One of the best services and programs for easy automatic online backup is iDrive. It has the most profitable terms and a simple interface. You can read more about iDrive cloud backup and storage here.
3. Do not open spam e-mails and protect your mailbox
Malicious attachments to spam or phishing e-mails are the most popular method of ransomware distribution. Using spam filters and creating anti-spam rules is good practice. One of the world leaders in anti-spam protection is MailWasher Pro. It works with various desktop applications and provides a very high level of anti-spam protection.
