What is Rans-A Ransomware

Rans-A is a new file-encryptor variant that belongs to the Xorist family. After successfully infiltrating the system, the ransomware will proceed to encrypt potentially important data and add .Rans-A to the original filename. As a result, a previously accessible file like 1.pdf will change to 1.pdf.Rans-A and become access-restricted. The main goal of ransomware is to extort money from victims for the decryption of files. Thus, the virus displays an error message and creates a text file called HOW TO DECRYPT FILES.txt that both show decryption instructions (in Portuguese).

Overall, victims are said the only way to retrieve data in its original condition is to contact cybercriminals within the set deadline. Should victims fail to do so by the end of the deadline, the decryption will supposedly be no longer available. In addition, the note also warns victims against deleting, renaming, or reporting the ransom message to any website/authority. Otherwise, cybercriminals’ e-mail may end up blocked and no longer accept requests for data decryption. As a rule, upon reaching out to cybercriminals, they set a price that has to be paid for decryption. This price may vary depending on extortionists and how valuable the encrypted data is. Unfortunately, cybercriminals are usually the only figures able to unlock access to data completely and safely. At the moment of writing this article, no known third-party tool is capable of bypassing ciphers generated by Rans-A Ransomware. For now, you can recover your data either by collaborating with ransomware developers or retrieving data from existing backup copies. Backups are copies of data stored on external devices such as USB drives, external hard drives, or SSDs.

Using your own backups is recommended over paying extortionists. This is because it is completely free and some cybercriminals may not provide any promised decryption tools/keys even after obtaining the payment. Always create regular backups in order to ensure the majority of data can be recovered in case of unexpected loss or unforeseen ransomware infection. If no backups are present, you can try some third-party tools or attempt to recover from windows shadow copies using our guide below. However, these alternatives may not always be effective and are only successful in rare cases. Before starting manual recovery without the involvement of cybercriminals, it is crucial to delete the ransomware virus from your system so that it does not impact other files or spread to neighboring systems connected to the same network. Even if you choose to collaborate with them to decrypt files, it is still important to make sure the ransomware is no longer present afterwards. Follow the steps in our guide to perform full-fledged ransomware removal and protect your system against such threats in the future.

How Rans-A Ransomware infected your computer

Ransomware can enter a badly protected system in a variety of sneaky ways – e.g., via phishing e-mail letters, unprotected RDP configuration, infected software installers (pirated or cracked), exploit kits, trojans, fake updates/license cracking tools, unreliable ads, backdoors, keyloggers, and other dubious channels. As a rule, the aim of these distribution vectors is to deceive users into downloading and opening some malicious file or link. For example, fraudelent e-mails tend to disguise harmful attachments as legitimate and genuine files, such as .DOCX, .XLSX, .PDF, .EXE, .ZIP, .RAR, or .JS. Cybercriminals make such messages look legitimate by mimicking templates of trustworthy organizations (e.g., delivery companies, tax authorities, banks, and so forth). Thus, it is essential to maintain caution while dealing with this sort of content.

To prevent the installation of malware, avoid interacting with shady download resources, torrent-sharing websites, dubious ads, potentially malicious attachments/links, and other types of content that may seem suspicious or compromised. Stick to downloading software only from official and trusted resources.
