What is SLAM Ransomware

SLAM is a ransomware-type virus that encrypts personal data to earn money on desperate users. In other words, it restricts access to data and keeps it under lock until victims pay a certain ransom fee. To make users spot the encryption, developers rename the compromised data using the .slam extension. To illustrate, a file like 1.pdf will be retitled to 1.pdf.slam and reset its original icon (in some cases). Then, after this part of encryption is done, SLAM opens a window stating information about the virus. Red text on the black background says that all files have been encrypted. In order to get them back, victims are asked to contact cybercriminals using one of the e-mails attached to the note. Thereafter, you will be given the necessary instructions to perform a transfer of ransom in money. In addition to that, users are warned that shutting down the PC, or using Windows applications (e.g. regedit, task manager, command prompt, etc.) is forbidden.

Otherwise, your PC will be locked and denied from getting boot up until the virus is present. The same will happen unless you contact extortionists within 12 hours. At this point of the investigation, cyber experts have not been yet able to find a tool that could provide data decryption for free, without involving the cybercriminals. Paying the ransom is also a risk as there is no guarantee that you will receive your files back. The only best way in this situation is deleting SLAM Ransomware and recovering your data via backup copies. If you do not have them created and stored in a separate location prior to the infection, then it is almost unreal to decrypt your files. If this is your case, you can delete the ransomware virus, save the encrypted data and wait until some anti-malware vendors develop free decryption for it. In addition to that, it is also known that SLAM developers install Azorult Spyware which helps them collect personal data like passwords, credentials, and more that can be used for no good purpose. To get instructions on how to remove SLAM Ransomware and learn the potential software that might be able to decrypt SLAM files in the future, follow our guidelines below.

How SLAM Ransomware infected your computer

SLAM Ransowmare is more likely to be distributed via e-mail spam or trojans. According to annual statistics, these are the most successful ways of spreading malware like SLAM. Normally, cybercriminals send a number of similar letters classified as spam. Curious or non-experienced users tend to open the content hidden inside of such messages. As a rule, extortionists attach reconfigured versions of MS Office documents, PDFs, executables, or JavaScript files to promote the infection. To force users into opening them, cybercriminals pose their letters as part of legitimate and globally-known companies. This elevates the trust of most users and makes them open the content. As a result of this, users might receive a trojan or ransomware infection straight out of the gates. Note that there is no way to prevent the infections after initiating the compromised files unless you have anti-malware installed. Thus, if you do not feel careful enough whilst using the web, there are programs that will help you stay away from dangerous content. You will learn more information about them down below. Also, before we get to removal and recovery options, it is necessary to name a few more distribution channels that are used by swindlers. This list includes unprotected RDP configuration, backdoors, keyloggers, fake software cracking tools, untrustworthy torrent downloads, Peer-to-Peer websites, software updates, and many more that target individuals and companies nowadays.

As an additional way to save your files, we recommend online backup. Local storages, such as hard drives, SSDs, flash drives, or remote network storages can be instantly infected by the virus once plugged in or connected to. SLAM Ransomware uses some techniques to exploit this. One of the best services and programs for easy automatic online backup is iDrive. It has the most profitable terms and a simple interface. You can read more about iDrive cloud backup and storage here.

3. Do not open spam e-mails and protect your mailbox
