What is Soviet Locker

Soviet Locker is a ransomware program. Ransomware is a type of malware usually designed to encrypt system-stored files and blackmail victims into paying money for its return. Soviet Locker is a surprisingly different instance – the virus does not demand any money for decryption. Instead, it shows a pop-up window claiming the restricted files can be unlocked using a password. This password cannot be retrieved from cybercriminals due to a lack of contact information. The reason for that might be that Soviet Locker is still under development and can be updated with real demands for payment in the future. For now, files affected by Soviet Locker can be decrypted without the help of cybercriminals.

Virus researchers managed to match the right password that works for the majority of victims. The password is c819381734f8s2748a8239j872hdhc7c8 and has to be entered into a field within the pop-up window. Once entered, all previously blocked data will become fully usable again. Note that after recovering access to files, it is also very important to make sure the virus is no longer operating inside of your system. Otherwise, it may continue encrypting other files or download more infections as well. Follow our instructions below to remove it and restore a safe computer experience eventually.

How Soviet Locker infected your computer

The majority of ransomware infections have been reported to spread via e-mail phishing attachments. Such attachments can be MS Office documents, PDFs, EXE, Archive, JavaScript, and other innocent-looking formats as well. Developers use them to disguise malicious scripts that are meant to initiate the installation of malware. Phishing messages sent to users all over the world contain click-bait titles and content to force inexperienced people into opening malicious attachments or links. Another popular way of distributing ransomware infections and other malware is via fake software updates/installers. Users may be redirected to suspicious pages that promote potentially fake software through ads, hidden buttons, or links placed on third-party websites. We advise you against using unofficial content around the web. Downloading pirated/cracked or other types of freely available software always bears a risk of catching something unwanted or even malicious. Be careful and protect yourself with modern and high-grade protection tools – those are discussed in our guide below along with virus removal.
