What is Babyduck Ransomware

Babyduck is a ransomware infection that encrypts data by assigning the .babyduck extension. The word encryption means users will no longer be able to open system-stored files because they are blocked. Those files will undergo two visual changes – a new extension and a reset of shortcut icons. To illustrate, a file like 1.pdf will be altered to 1.pdf.babyduck and drop its icon to blank. Right after this, Babyduck creates a text note with ransom instructions (README.babyduck).

Research related to this ransomware version has been temporarily frozen and not yet updated. The only thing that stands out clearly is how encrypted data will look after the ransomware attack. Despite there is no precise information on ransom instructions, they are more likely similar to other file-encryptors. Cybercriminals will probably ask you to pay for special decryption software that will access your data. The payment can be usually done only in cryptocurrency like Bitcoin. Apart from this, it is also common to see extortionists offer free file encryption. They allow victims to send 1 or a couple of files to test if they are able to decrypt them. This is somewhat of a trick meant to instill trust and motivate users towards paying the ransom. Cybercriminals may try many call-to-action techniques to keep victims involved. Whatever they are, it is often risky to transfer the requested ransom to cybercriminals. They can fool you and not send any decryption tools eventually. As a result, you will lose your money and nerves. Unless files can be officially decrypted, victims are advised to use backup copies for the recovery of files. This is the only option to restore them for free. You can also try some third-party programs, but we are unable to guarantee they will decrypt your data successfully. We recommend you give it a try only in case no other option is left. Move on to our guide below to learn how to remove Babyduck Ransomware from your computer and restore encrypted data.

How Babyduck Ransomware infected your computer

The majority of ransomware attacks happen the same way – through malicious e-mail spam letters (macros), trojans, fake set-ups (installers) imitating the installation of legal software, backdoors, keyloggers, botnets, exploits, unprotected RDP configuration, and other channels that did not fit in this list. As a rule, many cybercriminals use macros set up inside of legitimate files (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.) to deliver various infections, including ransomware. These files are usually sent to many many e-mails addresses around the globe. Once received, some users get curious and open the attached files or links leading to download pages. The result is obvious and does not need to be explained – ultimate infection of a system. Developers of malware may also attach .exe or .js files, but this is less frequent because many e-mail services block them immediately not letting such files come along with a message. Fraudulent groups may also spread malware via software disguised as legitimate. The most popular are Adobe Flash Player, pirated, cracked, and freeware programs. If you want to protect yourself against such threats in the future, make sure to be careful and wary of what you interact with around the web.
