What is Zepto Ransomware

Zepto Ransomware is new file-encrypting virus from Locky family. It uses RSA-2048 encryption algorithm and appends .zepto extensions to encrypted files and modifies file names with set of numbers and letters. First part of this set is your actually personal ID that is needed to pay the ransom and get decryptor. Ransom amount is 0.5 Bitcoins (~$365). Zepto creates _HELP_instructions.html file with instructions to make the payment. Instructions contain links to tor2web.org and onion.to websites, which are TOR hidden services gateways. This services, along with TOR browser, are used to protect authors of these viruses from tracking. At the moment of writing this article, there was NO way to decrypt .zepto files, except from online or local backups. However, we keep abreast of the situation and will update information as soon as decryptor appears. Use this guide to remove Zepto virus and restore files with .zepto extension for free.

How Zepto Ransomware infected your PC

Zepto like Locky uses e-mail attachments, with 2 types of files (.zip and .docm). First one uses archived java-script files. Second one uses macros inside the document, that will then download main executable. JavaScript files icons may look like text files and unsuspecting users may click on them. Virus assigns certain ID with the victims, that is used to name those files and to send decryption key. In order to prevent infection with this type of threats in future we recommend you to use SpyHunter 5 and HitmanPro with CryptoGuard.

  1. This article says the ransom is 0.5 bitcoins, but my ransom is 3.0 – that’s over $1800! Still, considering paying. Has anyone paid and actually got a key?

  2. Bonjour Lukat
Malheureusement je ne parle pas anglais et j’ai de la peine à tout comprendre
    remarque
Avec shadow explorer sans faire tout ceci j’ai
retrouvé les fichiers du lecteur C
mon problème et le 2ème disque et le disque dur externe

  3. My solution (succesfully used 5 days ago on a customer PC with WIN 7):
    – Removed the HD from PC and cloned using INATECK FD2002 (just to have a second chance if necessary)
    – With another Computer downloaded Norton Boot Recovery Tool (NBRT)
    – Mastered a DVD with the NBRT iso
    – Re-inserted the Hard Drive in the PC with NBRT DVD inserted. Booted from DVD
    – Scanned the PC e removed infected files.
    – Rebooted and in Windows rescanned with SpyHunter (portable)
    – Recovered files with Shadow Explorer and saved in a Folder on desktop (if you are lucky you will find shadow copies of all your files)
    – Deleted all encrypted files (*.ZEPTO) in folder (they were over 16.000 files in 1950 folders)
    – Deleted all _HELP_* files created by the ZEPTO Virus
    – Copied all recovered files from the folder on desktop in theyr original folders.

  4. Hi, so for the zepto files, there is a way to retrive thoses files back without having to pay the hackers. First way (once the pc is cleaned) try to see if you have a shadowcopy of your files. Shadow Explorer works pretty well. If it doesn’t work, you’ll have to use a file recover software. (cluster by cluster)

    cheers

    • It is surely worth waiting if you cannot recover this files other way. Recently Trend Micro released decryptor for similar ransomware called Cerber, hopefully antivirus vendors working on Zepto.

  5. Anch’io ho tutti i files zepto. Cosa faccio? Possibile che resta solo la formattazione dell’Hard Disk? Non si riesce a decifrare i codici?
