What is Matroska Ransomware

Matroska Ransomware is a malicious piece aimed at data encryption. Matroska used to show its activity a couple of years ago until it went dormant. Within some time, it started a series of new infections on users’ PCs. Whilst older examples of Matroska applied the .HUSTONWEHAVEAPROBLEM@KEEMAIL.ME, .happyness, .encrypted[Payfordecrypt@protonmail.com], .nefartanulo@protonmail.com extensions to encrypted files, recent attacks of this ransomware showed the new .siliconegun@tutanota.com extension being involved. Depending on which version impacted your system, a file like 1.mp4 will change to 1.mp4.happyness or 1.mp4.siliconegun@tutanota.com at the end of encryption. Once this process is finished, the virus goes further and creates a text file (HOW_TO_RECOVER_ENCRYPTED_FILES) with decryption instructions.

Alike other ransomware infections, Matroska asks victims to pay a fee. The amount may vary from person to person, however, we do not recommend buying their software. Luckily, experts found that Dr.Web (leading antimalware software) is able to decrypt your data legitimately and risk-free. Before doing so, you’ve got to make sure you deleted Matroska Ransomware from your computer. Only then you can use third-party tools to recover the data. For more information on both removal and data decryption, follow the article down below.

How Matroska Ransomware infected your computer

Because Matroska is a ransomware infection, it is oftentimes spread via e-mail messages categorized as spam. If you received a message that contains unknown attachments, more likely there is something to be afraid of. This is because such messages are spread and disguised as legitimate companies that deliver newsletters or similar content. In reality, they have no correlation with original companies. Simply said, spam messages sent by ostensibly legitimate sources, try to fool inexperienced users into clicking on the malicious files. Note that cybercriminals usually use MS Office documents, PDFs, executables, and JavaScript files to hide their malware. Although these file types are initially legitimate, some extortionists find them to be a good cover for running fraudulent activity. With that said, you should also know about trojans, fake software cracking tools, backdoors, keyloggers, and other channels used to deliver various types of malware. In order to prevent these channels from reaching your PC, it is important to be careful and protect yourself with anti-malware software.

Matroska Ransomware uses some techniques to exploit this. One of the best services and programs for easy automatic online backup is iDrive. It has the most profitable terms and a simple interface. You can read more about iDrive cloud backup and storage here.
